JuceOPL is a realtime, midi sound synthesizer with mono output, powered by DOSBox emulation, based on the Yamaha's YM3812 (POL2) sound chip popular in IBM PC-based sound cards in the 80s/90s. The instrument for linux is available in 32/64-bit versions (see link at bottom), but is also included in the Distrho-lv2 plugins package. The distro LibraZiK-2 now includes this synthesizer in the standard repositories.

JuceOPL includes two synthesis modes: FM and Additive. It is 9-note polyphonic (note status (A,D,S,R) is indicated in realtime at the top of the GUI as notes are played). Both of the oscillators (Modulator and Carrier) allow to select between eight different waveforms. An ADSR-type envelope is provided for each of these sources, as well as a frequency setting and attenuation. The Modulator's attenuation serves also to obtain distortion, as this oscillator is self-modulating. A feedback knob with seven progressively-distorted settings is provided for the Modulator as well. The Carrier's attenuation will control global volume unless using only the Modulator.

JuceOPL also includes vibrato and tremolo control for each oscillator, as well as discrete sustain buttons, envelope tracking, attenuation control and touch sensitivity. Vibrato and tremolo each have two setting possibilities. JuceOPL provides its own preset management; make sure when saving presets that you also add the .SBI extension to the file name.

JuceOPL is more than a chiptune emulator: it can produce deep, aggressive basses, crisp bells and marimbas, and lots more in between. A good way to discover the range of subtleties this synth can offer is to adjust the ADSR envelopes slightly against one another, and with different feedback levels. Unless harshness is desired, keep the Modulator attenuation level moderate.
